Kaohsiung, Dec. 22 (CNA) The Taiwan Navy's ninth Chinchiang-class coastal patrol boat was launched at the southern port of Kaohsiung on Wednesday.
Presiding over a ceremony marking the launch of the new boat, christened "Pochiang," at the shipyard of the China Shipbuilding Corp. (CPC), Navy Fleet Commander Hu Tsai-kwei said that a series of weapon-installations and performance tests will be conducted before it is formally delivered to the Navy.
With the latest addition, the Navy will have a total of 11 Chinchiang-class vessels.
The boat is 61.4 meters long, and has a beam of 9.5 meters and a displacement of 540 tons. It will be able to travel at a speed of 25 knots.
The vessels will be used for patrolling Taiwan's coastal waters and for conducting patrol and protection missions in certain other areas. In times of war, they will be equipped with additional weapons systems and deployed on combat operations with the Navy's much larger warships. (by Bear Lee)
