FIFTH DOMESTICALLY-MADE PATROL VESSEL HANDED OVER TO ROC NAVY

Kaohsiung, Nov. 17 (CNA) The 500-ton patrol vessel Kao Chiang, the fifth Chin Chiang-class vessel constructed by China Shipbuilding Corp. for the Republic of China Navy, was handed over to the navy on Wednesday.

The handover ceremony was held at the Kaohsiung shipbuilding yard of China Shipbuilding Corp., with the participation of more than 100 sailors.

China Shipbuilding Corp. signed a contract in June 1997 to construct 11 Chin Chiang-class vessels for the navy. So far, five vessels have been delivered, with the rest to be completed by May 2000.

Like the four previously-delivered vessels, the Kao Chiang is equipped with advanced search radar, missiles and high-speed artillery.

The vessel will undertake patrol, rescue and safeguarding missions during peacetime, and will augment its weapon system to join combat missions in the event of war. (By Victor Lai)
