Taipei, Nov. 16 (CNA) The navy destroyer Kaiyang was formally decommissioned on Tuesday after serving in the Republic of China Navy for 22 years.
Captain Tung Hsiang-lung presided over the decommission ceremony at Hsinpin wharf in Kaohsiung Harbor in southern Taiwan. He led the ship's previous captains, past and present navy servicemen and their dependents on a final tour of the vessel to bid it farewell.
Tung noted that the Kaiyang, originally a US navy destroyer, was commissioned in 1945. It served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War before being decommissioned in 1976. The ROC Navy bought the ship the following year, and refitted it with a new weaponry system.
During the 22 years, the vessel completed more than 580 missions including reconnaissance, escorting, transportation and military exercises.
With the building of second-generation navy ships in recent years, the ROC Navy has begun to phase out older destroyers bought from the United States. (By Lilian Wu)
