Taipei, Oct. 19 (CNA) None of individuals or either side of the Taiwan Strait has the right to decide China's future, said the chairman of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), after mainland China President Jiang Zemin's revelation on Monday of a timetable for China's reunification.
Su Chi made the remarks during a press interview in Taipei on Monday evening. He stressed that the China dispute can only be settled through bilateral negotiations between Taiwan and mainland China.
The Republic of China government hopes that the two sides will be reunified in a gradual process, rather than in a situation that sees one side swallow the other, Su stressed.
Jiang said in an interview with The Times of Britain that by the middle of next century, mainland China "will resolve the question of Taiwan and accomplish the great cause of national reunification by adhering to the policy of 'peaceful reunification' and 'one country, two systems' after the successful return of Hong Kong and Macau."
Su described the statement as being merely a unilateral opinion of the Beijing authorities, saying if Beijing wants to set up any timetables it should make one that concerns mainland China's democratization.
"We believe it's more pragmatic now for Beijing to formulate a 50 years timetable for the mainland's democratization," Su said.
If Beijing can resolve its democratic problems, it will face no difficulties on China's reunification, Su added.
Jiang seemed to draw a beautiful picture of the mainland's future in his remarks, in which, however, there were no words about the process of mainland China's democratization, Su said, noting Taiwan has been taking the mainland's democratization as the most important matter in the reunification of China.
