Taipei, Oct. 16 (CNA) The navy destroyer "Kunyang" was formally decommissioned on Saturday after serving in the ROC navy for 31 years.
Rear Admiral Wang Shan-chun, the captain of the destroyer, presided over the decommissioning ceremony held at Hsinpin Wharf in Kaohsiung Harbor. Past and present captains and navy servicemen who served on the destroyer were invited to bid farewell to the ship.
Wang noted that during its 31 years, "Kunyang" completed 997 missions, including reconnaissance, protection of fishing vessels and escort and transport missions to offshore islands, making an indelible contribution to the ROC navy.
Kunyang, originally a Fletcher-class destroyer from the United States, was launched in July 1943. It served in the Second World War and the Korean War.
Taiwan received the destroyer from the US in 1968 and the ship was commissioned in October of the same year.
The navy has been building its second -generation naval ships in recent years and has begun phasing out the older destroyers which it bought from the US since 1994. (By Lilian Wu)
