Taipei, Oct. 14 (CNA) Taiwan still sincerely hopes that top Beijing negotiator Wang Daohan will visit Taiwan, Chang Jung-kung, director of the Kuomintang's Department of Mainland Research, said on Thursday.
The sincerity of Taiwan has not decreased but increased, Chang said.
A Taiwan visit by Wang as soon as possible will help improve Taiwan people's perception of Beijing, Chang said, adding that mainland China President Jiang Zemin's recent statement of two preconditions for Wang's visit was too severe and that the statement would only create obstacles to meetings between Wang and Koo Chen-fu, his Taipei counterpart.
Chang made the statements Thursday while commemorating the first anniversary of the Koo-Wang meeting in Shanghai, for which he served as vice spokesman for the Taipei delegation.
Chang said that Wang's visit would help relieve the Taiwan people's mood of displeasure toward Beijing after it tried to bully Taiwan in the wake of island's biggest earthquake of the century on Sept. 21.
He hoped that Beijing would grab this golden opportunity.
Chang went on to say Jiang recently said that Taiwan should revoke President Lee's "special state-to-state relationship" theory, and that Lee should receive Wang in his capacity as Kuomintang chairman, as two preconditions for Wang's Taiwan visit. These preconditions are not only too severe but also create obstacles to future Koo-Wang meetings, Chang noted.
It was understood that Beijing could not accept Taipei's "special state-to-state relationship" theory and Taipei could not accept Beijing's "one country, two systems" formula. Both mainland China and Taiwan should minimize the differences by means of wisdom and negotiation, Chang said.
Referring to the differences between Taiwan and mainland China on the "one China" issue, Chang said that interpretations of "one China" by each side were agreed upon in 1992 and still exist today, Chang said.
Exchanges relating to non-political issues have been conducted across the strait based on each side's interpretation of "one China" since then, Chang said. (By Edward Chen)
