Taipei, Oct. 14 (CNA) Koo Chen-fu, chairman of the Taipei-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), said Thursday that he wants to visit mainland China again if necessary.
Koo made the remarks while reviewing the development of cross-Taiwan Strait relations in the past 12 months after his visit to the mainland.
The top negotiator for Taiwan, who visited mainland China Oct. 14-19 last year, said Taipei still welcomes Chairman Wang Daohan of Beijing's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS) to visit Taipei this fall.
If it is difficult for Wang to come, Koo said, he wants to visit the mainland again to invite him.
Wang was originally scheduled to visit Taipei this month to reciprocate Koo's mainland visit, but this plan has been shelved since Taiwan's President Lee Teng-hui redefined cross-strait relations as a "special state-to-state relationship" in early July.
Beijing leaders insisted that unless Lee retracted his "special state-to-state relationship" statement, cross-strait exchanges, including Wang's Taipei visit, would be frozen.
Koo told the media that he is younger than Wang, and therefore, if necessary he wants to visit the mainland again to extend Taipei's invitation to Wang. (By Victor Lai)
