TWO MORE RENTED MISSILE FRIGATES ARRIVE IN TAIWAN FROM US

Kaohsiung, Oct. 4 (CNA) Two American-made Knox-class missile frigates rented from the US Navy sailed into a Republic of China naval base in southern Taiwan on Monday.

The ROC Naval Command said that the "Ning Yang" and the "Yi Yang" are the seventh and eighth frigates the ROC Navy has rented from the US Navy, and added that they will be commissioned in the near future to improve the navy's anti-submarine capability.

The two frigates were brought to Taiwan from the United States by ROC naval personnel after a 40-day voyage across the Pacific Ocean.

ROC Navy Commander-in-Chief Hu Tsai-kuei and other ranking officers were on hand to greet the arrival of the two frigates at the naval base.

The Knox-class missile frigates were constructed for the US Navy in the 1970s. So far, the ROC Navy has rented eight such vessels for anti-submarine duties. (By Victor Lai)
