Washington, Sept. 10 (CNA) US Republican presidential hopeful Gary Bauer charged Friday that mainland China's decision to hold invasion exercises on the coast facing Taiwan "confirms the bankruptcy of the Clinton policy of appeasement toward Communist China."
The conservative leader then called on the leading Republican presidential candidate, Texas Governor George W. Bush, to "speak out against our blatant appeasement of China" before Saturday's Clinton-Jiang summit in New Zealand.
"The audacity of holding these exercises on the eve of a major American concession permitting Chinese entry into the World Trade Organization confirms the consistent pattern of the last ten years. We offer unilateral concessions to Beijing, and Beijing demonstrates in the most insulting manner that we will gain nothing in return -- not even a brief, face-saving moratorium on China's never-ending war threats against a peaceful, democratic government on Taiwan," said Bauer.
Since the Clinton-Gore administration seems impervious to these threats and insults, Bauer stressed, "it is all the more important that my party's front-runner, George W. Bush, join me in making it clear that if our party gains the White House, the days of unilateral concessions that risk an Asian war will be over."
The Central Intelligence Agency and the Department of State published separate reports on Thursday presenting evidence showing that mainland China is emerging as a greater ballistic missile threat to the United States and is continuing to violate the human rights of the mainland Chinese people.
"At a time when new government reports further implicate China in dissemination of missile technology and relentless persecution of religious believers, the (Clinton) administration is making a huge blunder by offering on a silver plate what the Chinese dictatorship most wants -- entry into the WTO," added Bauer.
