Taipei, July 28 (CNA) There have been "no signs of escalating tension" across the Taiwan Strait, but the ROC military nevertheless remains on high alert, a ranking military official said on Wednesday.
Sun Tao-yu, vice minister of national defense, said that although there has been a greater number of mainland Chinese jet fighters landing and taking off recently, the activity has all been limited to mainland airspace on the west side of the mid-line of the Taiwan Strait.
Sun was answering questions at a public hearing sponsored by Lawmaker Cheng Lung-shui of the New Party, who cited recent media reports that an increased number of mainland Chinese jet fighter movements has affected civilian flight services between Hong Kong and Shanghai, and that an ROC air force base in central Taiwan has canceled unnecessary training.
Turning to the recent remarks made in Bangkok by Liu Tai-ying, a ranking Kuomintang cadre, that Taiwan would consider launching a guided missile attack off the coast of Hong Kong and Shanghai in the event of a cross-strait conflict, Sun refused to comment, saying only that "Liu is entitled to his opinions."
