Washington, July 22 (CNA) An amendment of a bill requiring the United States to ask Beijing to renounce the use of force against Taiwan, and obliging the US government to aid Taiwan should the island face military action cruised through a committee of the US House of Representatives on Wednesday.
The amendment, tacked on to a bill on the security of US overseas embassies, was passed unanimously through the Committee of the Full House of Representatives.
The provision, the first sign of the US Congress' solidarity with the Republic of China after the heightening of tension between Taipei and Beijing over ROC President Lee's redefinition of ties with Beijing, was sponsored by Rep. David Wu (D-Ore), and six of his colleagues.
Meanwhile, another pro-ROC bill -- the Taiwan Security Enhancement Act -- being pushed by Sen. Jesse Helms and others, was reported to be picking up steam in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
