Taipei, July 18 (CNA) Mainland China's main objective in releasing the announcement of proposed military drills is to intimidate Taiwan, said the ruling Kuomintang's Department of Mainland Affairs Research Director Chang Rong-kung on Sunday.
Chang made the remarks in response to a poll showing that the majority of people in Taiwan back President Lee's statehood definition of relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait and resent mainland military threats.
He urged Beijing authorities to respond positively to Lee's remark, saying the two sides of the Taiwan Strait could take the former West and East Germany's reunification method as a model.
Chang said the poll result surprised nobody since it reflected the deep-rooted concept held by Taiwan people that the Republic of China is a sovereign country. He added that the concept has been reinforced by Taiwan's democratization.
President Lee's remark was a mirror of Taiwan's public opinion accurately describing the status quo of the two sides without changing the political situation, Chang added.
According to a survey by the Chinese Association for EurAsian Studies and released on Sunday, 74.2 percent of the respondents supported Lee's remarks, while almost 80 percent reckoned Taiwan should continue bidding for United Nations membership and continue pursuit of diplomatic allies even it means heightening tension between Taiwan and mainland China.
