EXECUTIVE YUAN ADOPTS `TWO STATES IN ONE NATION' FORMULA
Taipei, July 15 (CNA) Six days after President Lee Teng-hui
redefined Taipei-Beijing ties as "a special state-to-state,"
relationship, the Executive Yuan on Thursday adopted the term "two
states in one nation" to represent the new idea.
Announcing the new term at a press conference on Thursday,
Mainland Affairs Council Chairman Su Chi said the new theory has been
coined to brace for "the upcoming new era of political dialogue
between Taipei and Beijing."
This new era, which is expected to begin later this year with the
scheduled visit to Taiwan by Beijing's top negotiator with Taiwan
Wang Daohan, will see all problems facing the two sides being aired
and discussed, according to Su.
The "two states in one nation" is different from the so-called
"one China, two states," which could confused the world into thinking
that China is the Beijing regime only, said Su.
"We put forward our formula to counter Beijing's `one China'
principle, which is a trick intended to downgrade Taiwan into a
province of the mainland," said Su.
"Starting with the `one China' policy, Beijing is trying to end
its dispute with the Republic of China by imposing its reunification
formula of `one country, two systems' on Taiwan. We will not be so
foolish as to lie on this bed," Su emphasized.
This is the second time in a week that Su has elaborated on Lee's
statement made on July 9 in an interview with the Deutsche Welle
radio station.
