NO SIGNS OF BEIJING MILITARY MOVEMENT: MND
Taipei, July 14 (CNA) There have been no signs to date of
large-scale military movements by Chinese communist troops, a ranking
official from the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said on
Wednesday.
Vice Minister of National Defense Sun Tao-yu told reporters that
the ROC military remains on high alert to protect the security of the
Taiwan Strait and is closely watching the movements of mainland
Chinese troops.
A Hong Kong-based newspaper reported on Tuesday that Beijing is
planning to launch a series of military drills larger then the ones
conducted in the summer of 1996. It has also been rumored that eight
mainland Chinese jet fighters have flown over the mid-line of the
Taiwan Strait, encroaching on Taiwan's airspace.
President Lee Teng-hui's recent "state-to-state relations"
redefinition of Taiwan's relationship with mainland China has
provoked a strong response from Beijing, Wang Daohan, mainland
China's top negotiator with Taiwan, has claimed that the framework of
cross-strait dialogue and contacts no longer exists.
