DOD RESPONSE REGARDING VERSION OF WOLFOWITZ TESTIMONY
The Department of Defense issued on April 20 the following response to inquiries regarding a version of the prepared testimony by Paul Wolfowitz, undersecretary of defense for policy, for the April 19 hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee:
"It was not our intention to indicate that Taiwan is an unresolved territorial issue. Our policy is unchanged. The United States acknowledges the Chinese position that there is only one China and that Taiwan is part of China. We believe that differences between the two sides should be resolved peacefully by Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Straits."
One version of the as-prepared-for-delivery testimony distributed by DoD listed Taiwan among "unresolved territorial issues." The version of the testimony distributed at the hearing -- which ran on the Wireless File April 19 as EP404 -- did not refer to Taiwan in this manner.
