The US ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, has announced that Syria and Israel agreed to a ceasefire, following days of intense Israeli airstrikes and violence in Syria's southwestern Suwayda region.
Barrack claimed in a post on X early on Saturday that the ceasefire between Syria and Israel was "supported" by Washington and "embraced" by Turkey, Jordan, and Syria's neighbors.
"We call upon Druze, Bedouins, and Sunnis to put down their weapons and together with other minorities build a new and united Syrian identity," Barrack wrote.
The HTS regime also declared an "immediate ceasefire" and called on "all parties to fully respect" the truce on Saturday.
The development comes amid clashes between HTS regime forces, Bedouin tribes, and Druze minority groups, leading to a worsening humanitarian crisis and the displacement of tens of thousands.
On Wednesday, Israel launched heavy air strikes targeting Syria's Ministry of Defense in the heart of Damascus, and also hit HTS regime forces in the country's Suwayda region.
The Israeli regime claims it has launched attacks to protect Syria's Druze minority in Suwayda, where ethnically charged clashes between Druze and Bedouin armed groups and HTS regime forces have reportedly left hundreds dead.
The Israeli air strikes on Syria on Wednesday, which killed at least three and wounded dozens of others, came after a ceasefire agreement mediated by the US, Turkey, and Arab countries was reached between Druze leaders and the HTS regime on the same day.
Following the Israeli attacks, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, leader of the HTS-led regime in Damascus, said in a televised speech early on Thursday that protecting the country's Druze citizens and their rights was a priority, and though Syria would prefer to avoid a conflict with Israel, it was not afraid of war.
Bedouin armed groups are reportedly unwilling to accept the ceasefire, citing concerns about the normalization of relations with Israel.
Reports indicate that clashes between Bedouin groups and HTS forces are ongoing in the villages of Al-Mtoneh and Lahitheh on the outskirts of Suwayda.
