Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa'ar today (Wednesday, 16 July 2025) held a series of calls with his counterparts regarding the developments in Syria.

FM Sa'ar spoke with European Union High Rep. for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, and Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis.

In his calls, FM Sa'ar stressed the recurring phenomenon of massacres and attacks against minorities in Syria: Alawites, Kurds, Druze, and Christians - both by forces of the Syrian regime and by jihadist gangs that support it. Minister Sa'ar also stressed the consistent pattern of exploiting these riots for the regime's interests.

The statements about an "independent investigation" of the events are a farce both because regime forces themselves took part in them and because we still remember a similar hollow promise made following the massacres against the Alawites.

Minister Sa'ar said in the calls that preventing harm to minorities and respecting their rights were among the conditions set by the European Union itself for lifting sanctions against Syria. Minister Sa'ar also said that continuing harm to minorities would not enable stability to be achieved in Syria, contrary to the interests of Europe itself.

Minister Sa'ar emphasized in the talks Israel's interests in stability and preventing the creation of a threat against it in southern Syria, as well as its commitment to preventing harm to the Druze community.

The regime in Syria has been given clear messages and it knows exactly how to restore quiet and stability if it so desires.
