Iran top diplomat warned that the country's response to any US attack on it's forces in Syria will be harsh.
Tehran (ISNA) - Iran foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has revealed that Tehran told the US through back channels that it did not want the Israel-Hamas war to spread further, but also warned Washington that regional conflict could be unavoidable if Israeli attacks on Gaza continue.
"Over the past 40 days, messages have been exchanged between Iran and the US, via the US interests section at the Swiss embassy in Tehran," foreign minister said in an interview with Financial Times in Geneva, while ruling out the possibility of direct talks between the two foes.
Amirabdollahian also maintained that Hezbollah and other movements in Palestine, Iraq, Syria and Yemen were not Iran's proxy forces, saying each had an independent political identity. But he warned that these groups "are not indifferent towards the killing of their Muslim and Arab peers in Palestine".
The US Department of Defense on said its military bases in Iraq and Syria were attacked more than 60 times since Oct. 17.
Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh also said the attacks have so far left more than 50 US troops lightly injured.
Assaults against US bases are believed to be in response to US support for Israel in its deadly onslaught on Gaza.
As US claimed that it has targeted Iran's Revolutionary Guards bases in Eastern Syria in response to attacks, Iran foreign minister said that on of the bases has no forces and facilities at the time of the attack.
"I know one of these targets when US forces attacked; There has been a place where in the past our military advisers used to fight against terrorism, along with the Syrian forces, but this place lacked any forces and facilities at the time of the American attack." Amirabdollahian asserted.
In case of any casualty as a result of attacks, Iran top diplomat said that "According to the news, none of the Iranian forces have been hit, and of course in that case, Iran's response will be harsh".
