Question: Yesterday we received reports about another Israeli attack against some facilities in the Syrian Arab Republic. Could you comment on this?

Maria Zakharova: According to the Russian Reconciliation Centre for Syria, four Israeli Air Force fighters fired several guided missiles at facilities in the vicinity of Al-Kiswah, Damascus Province, in the early hours of February 9. Later Israel launched 10 surface-to-surface missiles from the occupied Golan Heights at air defence positions of the Syrian Armed Forces. Eight of the missiles were destroyed by Russian-made anti-aircraft weapons used by the Syrian military. The attack resulted in one dead and five wounded Syrian servicemen. In a statement the Syrian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the Israeli attack and warned of the serious consequences for regional stability that such attacks pose.

The continuing Israeli strikes on targets in Syria are a major concern. They constitute a gross violation of Syrian sovereignty and are capable of triggering a rapid escalation of the situation. In addition, such actions create serious risks for international civil air traffic, not to mention the fact that the unending attacks against Syrian military facilities reduce the combat readiness of the Syrian Armed Forces and undermine the efforts taken by the Syrians and their allies to eliminate the terrorist presence in that country. We have consistently and resolutely opposed to turning Syria into an arena of armed confrontation among third countries. We are earnestly calling on Israel to abstain from such military actions.
