Russia says Iran pullout from Syria 'unrealistic'

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Moscow, July 4, IRNA -- The Russian foreign minister on Wednesday rejected the calls for withdrawal of Iranian military advisors from Syria and said that Iran's pullout from Syria is unrealistic.

Demands for Iran's complete withdrawal from Syria are 'unrealistic,' Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after meeting with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi.

The Russian top diplomat noted that Iran is one of the key powers in the region, and that it would be 'absolutely unrealistic' to expect it to abandon its interests.

He said regional powers should discuss mutual complaints and negotiate a compromise, the AP reported.

Presence of Iranian military advisors has helped Syria resist a long-standing foreign sponsored civil war over the past seven years.
