Damascus, Feb 11, IRNA -- Some 160 Syrian citizens have been killed since the beginning of Turkish military attacks on Afrin, according to executive council of self-proclaimed Democratic Federation of Northern Syria (DFNS).

Al Mayadeen network, quoting DFNS reported Saturday night that 26 children and 17 women were among those killed in the attacks.

DFNS also said that 395 people were also wounded and 60,000 others were forced to flee the region.

The Turkish army has launched operation 'Olive Branch' in Afrin with an aim of driving Kurdish groups from Afrin. According to Turkish media, 6,000 Turkish military men are participating in the operation.

A Turkish military helicopter was shot down by Syrian Kurdish fighters in Afrin Saturday and two persons on board were killed.

The Ankara government says the aim of the military operation is to destroy Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), Syrian Kurdish armed group YPG and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The Turkish officials have announced that they respect the territorial integrity of Syria and that the military units of that country will leave the region after suppressing armed Kurdish groups.
