A military source told Sputnik that the Syrian Army is regaining control of large territories south of Raqqa and eliminating terrorists along the way.

"The Syrian Army has conducted a successful military operation in a desert area and regained control of the villages of Huweja Shanan, al-Rahba, al Sabka, al Jaraih oil district and a 30 km long section on the southern bank of the Euphrates River," the source said.

The source also noted that the operation in this area of the desert began on July 14.

"At the moment, it is possible to talk about the destruction of a large number of terrorists. In addition, hundreds of militants were wounded, 330 vehicles, 12 leaders' headquarters, three tanks, two combat vehicles, three ammunition depots, 11 different guns and five machine guns were completely destroyed," the source said.

The source said that among the eliminated terrorists there were citizens of Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Chechnya.

Raqqa has remained under control of the Daesh terrorist group since 2013 and is considered its de facto capital. The operation to liberate the city was launched by the Kurdish-Arab Syrian Democratic Forces supported by the US-led international coalition, in early June.

On Thursday, a spokesman for Syria's Tomorrow Movement, a national opposition party, told Sputnik that the city would hopefully be completely liberated within three months.
