The Daesh militant group is not powerful by itself, it is made strong by the support it receives from western and regional countries, Syrian President Bashar Assad told the RT broadcaster.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting Syrian opposition groups striving to overthrow the president. Damascus is also fighting numerous extremist and terrorist groups such as the Jabhat Fatah al Sham and Daesh, both outlawed in Russia. According to the United Nations, at least 300,000 Syrians have died since the beginning of the conflict.
"[Daesh is] as strong as the support that they get from the West and regional powers … If you talk isolated case, ISIS as isolated case, they're not strong, because they don't have the natural social incubator. Without it, terrorists cannot be strong enough. But the real support they have, the money, the oil field investment, the support of the American allies' aircraft, that's why they are strong," Assad said.
