The United Nations is alarmed by reports of renewed fighting in Aleppo despite the announced ceasefire and calls for an urgent pause to allow civilians leave the city, a spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The Syrian government forces are in the final phase of liberating the besieged city from terrorists. According to the Russian center for Syrian reconciliation, on Wednesday only 1 square mile of the city's territory was still under the militants' control.

The spokesman said tens of thousands of Syrian men, women and children were able to leave the eastern part of Aleppo in the recent days. The UN team is providing help to the displaced population on the ground in the areas where is has access.

"The UN is deeply concerned by reports of fighting in Aleppo today despite the announcement of a ceasefire agreement last night," Dujarric said. "We urgently call for a pause in fighting to allow people who wish to leave safely the besieged eastern Aleppo for a destination for their choice."

Since 2012, Aleppo, formerly the largest city in Syria, has been heavily involved in the conflict between the government forces and militants, which led to the city eventually divided into the western districts held by the government and regularly attacked by the militants holding on to the eastern districts.

The organization is ready to step up its support in all parts of Aleppo, however, it is critical for UN workers to obtain access to all areas where people are in need, he added.
