The UN Security Council should immediately refer the case of a school bombing in Syria to the International Criminal Court now that Russia supports such an investigation, UN Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown said at a briefing Thursday.
UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the attack on a school in Syria's Idlib and called for an investigation into the bombing. She also said that international media "launched an attack" on Russia by claiming that Moscow and Damascus are behind the bombing without presenting evidence.
"The Security Council should meet now because while Russia vetoed a resolution to refer atrocities in Syria to the International Criminal Court in 2014, the Russian [Ministry of] Foreign Affairs spokesperson has just said of the school killings that we demand all international organizations join the investigation without further delay," Brown told reporters.
Earlier in the day, the executive director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Anthony Lake said that as many as 22 children and six teachers were killed in an attack on a school in Idlib.
