GENEVA (Sputnik) – The United Nations is ready to send humanitarian convoy to Syrian Aleppo but there are many details which must be settled in advance as trans-border operations are complicated, Senior Adviser to UN Special Envoy for Syria Jan Egeland said Monday.
"So as soon as all of the parties have agreed to it, it shouldn't take us much time to start evacuate wounded and give supplies to Aleppo. We have prepared one [convoy] for this. And we do have supplies ready. So we do ready. But there are many details that has to be sorted out because we will have to cross several front lines to do this operation. So it's a complicated operation, but we're willing and ready to do it and it's very urgent to get it going," Egeland told RIA Novosti in an interview.
Fighting in Aleppo has escalated as the Syrian army and local militia forces managed to encircle groups of militants in Aleppo's eastern districts. Government troops began to advance after the September 12 ceasefire collapsed.
Two international meetings on Syrian settlement took place over the weekend, one in Swiss Lausanne on Saturday with another one in London on Sunday but to no avail.
