Syrian army is fighting Daesh on the outskirts of Palmyra to recapture the historic city, a source in the offensive's headquarters said Wednesday.

PALMYRA (Sputnik) – Syrian army in cooperation with the "Desert Falcons" militia is fighting Daesh on the outskirts of Palmyra to recapture the historic city, a source in the offensive's headquarters said Wednesday.

"In the near future, frontline militia troops plan to take up positions on the outskirts of the city. Unfortunately, the historic part of Palmyra, as well as the stronghold, are still under terrorist control. Fierce battles are continuing on all three fronts of the offensive," the source told RIA Novosti.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with the country's government fighting numerous opposition factions and jihadist groups.

Palmyra has been under Daesh control since May 2015. The jihadist group, which is outlawed in many countries, including Russia and the United States, has already destroyed part of the ancient city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
