Only al-Assad can decide about his presence in upcoming Syrian elections, says Iran

TEHRAN (ISNA)- Iranian deputy foreign minister reiterated that only Syrians can decide about the future of their country and elect their own president.

20 representatives of the EU countries and the UN as well as the US and other countries joined the Vienna 2 meeting on Syria in Geneva which lasted about 7 hours and ended up after the participants issued a statement.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Countries Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said some countries were trying to add removal of Syrian president from power in the communiqué and added, "In contrast, and given to the recent terrorist attacks in Beirut and Paris we stressed that the meeting should send a clear message to terrorists and there should be a proper planning to

deal with them."

The participants agreed on a timetable to settle the Syrian political crisis. They would prepare a roadmap in six months and implement it in 18 months.

Iran stressed efforts of all sides to battle terrorists and hold ceasefire for 6 months, he said, adding the political solution should continue for 18 months which includes negotiations between Syrian government and the opposition.

He also said that only Syrian President Bashar al-Assad can decide about his presence in the upcoming Syrian elections and it is only Syrians who are legitimate to decide about the issue.
