At least 26 civilians have been killed and 70 others injured in twin terrorist bombings in Syria's northwestern Hasaka City.

The attacks, which took place on Monday, left several women and children dead among others, Syria's state SANA news agency reported citing unnamed sources.

The first car bombing occurred in the Khashman neighborhood in the northern outskirts of the city, killing five people and injuring 30.

Shortly after the first blast, another explosive-laden vehicle went off in al-Mahata neighborhood in the western part of the city, claiming 21 lives. Forty others were wounded in the explosion.

The report added that the bombing inflicted heavy damage on the buildings and vehicles nearby.

Medical source at the Hasakah Health Directorate, meanwhile, said that most of the injured in the al-Mahatta bombing were women and children, with three of them in critical condition.

The conflict in Syria, which started in March 2011, has reportedly claimed more than 240,000 lives up until now.

The violence has also forced over 3.8 million Syrians to take refuge in neighboring countries, including Jordan and Lebanon. More than 7.2 million others have been displaced within Syria, according to the United Nations.
