TEHRAN (ISNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said training armed groups known as the so-called moderate Syrian opposition is blatant violation of international rules.
"Training and providing weapons for armed groups known as moderate Syrian opposition is blatant breach of international rules and repetition of previous strategic mistakes which have led to formation of ISIL, al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups," Afkham said.
She also said that the US resistance on arming these groups would only lead to further destruction and raising the number of victims.
She further noted that the UN silence on measures of the US and certain regional states runs counter to the organization's moves on suspending conflicts in Aleppo.
Her remarks came after Turkey and the US have signed an agreement to train and arm the so-called moderate Syrian opposition forces.
The US embassy in Ankara said that the deal had been signed by US Ambassador John Bass and Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu.
The US is planning to send more than 400 troops to train 15,000 Syrian fighters over three years. Turkey has offered to host training sites for the scheme.
