Kurdish fighters have successfully held off ISIL Takfiri militants in Kobani, preventing the terrorists from advancing into the heart of the besieged Syrian Kurdish town.

On Monday, Kurdish fighters managed to hold their ground as automatic gunfire and mortar fire continued in an area less than one kilometer (0.6 miles) from the common border between Syria and Turkey.

By taking control of the area, ISIL Takfiri militants would be able to block Kobani's access to the Turkish border.

According to deputy Head of the Kobani Defense Council, Ocalan Iso, the town center is under heavy artillery and mortar fire.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has announced heavy losses for the Takfiri militants in overnight fighting, stating that 36 ISIL members, all foreigners, have been killed.

Meanwhile, the US-led military coalition has carried out two fresh airstrikes against the ISIL positions in and around Kobani.

Kobani and its surroundings have been under attack since mid-September, with ISIL militants capturing dozens of nearby Kurdish villages.

The weeks-long intense battle for the strategic town has forced nearly 200,000 people to take refuge in Turkey.

On October 10, the UN envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, warned that thousands of people 'will most likely be massacred' if Kobani falls into the hands of ISIL militants.
