The Syrian army is pressing ahead with its mop-up operations against foreign-backed militants across the country, inflicting heavy losses on them.

Syrian troops took control of al-Ramouseh district in the northwestern province of Aleppo and killed scores of militants in different parts of it, the official SANA news agency reported on Sunday.

Army units also destroyed several militant hideouts across the western province of Homs, the report noted, adding that many militants were killed and their weapons were destroyed.

Similar operations were also conducted in the provinces of Daraa, Hama, Latakia and Idlib.

The development came a day after Syrian government forces took control of al-Matahen area near the city of Aleppo following fierce battles with militants.

Government forces were said to have killed an unspecified number of militants and destroyed their vehicles and ammunition on Saturday.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011. Over 150,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the turmoil.

According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

On April 13, President Bashar al-Assad said the war in Syria has shifted strongly in favor of government forces as they have made continuous gains against the foreign-backed Takfiri militants in the Arab country.
