The Syrian army has launched an offensive against foreign-backed militants holed up in the northwestern city of Idlib.
Army units on Sunday killed scores of militants in skirmishes near farms in the city while similar clashes have been reported to be underway between the government troops and Takfiri militants across Syria.
The development comes a day after the army troops regained the control of al-Zareh town in the central province of Homs on Saturday, when they pushed into the town following days of fierce clashes with militants in the region.
Many militants were killed during the army operation and their weapons were destroyed.
On March 6, army units destroyed two cars equipped with heavy machine guns and killed a group of militants in the town of Yabroud.
Syrian forces also targeted militant-held areas in Khan al-Sheikh and Zakiya neighborhoods in al-Kisweh area of the capital Damascus and eliminated many militants.
Since the turmoil broke out in Syria three years ago, some 130,000 people have been killed and millions of others displaced due to the crisis.
According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
