Head of a foreign-backed militant group in Syria is to visit London to ask Britain to back foreign military intervention in the Middle Eastern country.
Head of the so-called Free Syrian Army group Salim Idris is to hold talks with British Foreign Secretary William Hague, trying to use the Wednesday alleged chemical attack on a Damascus suburb to change London’s decision not to arm Syrian militants.
Syrian militants claim the government forces led the attack that has reportedly killed hundreds of people but the government has vehemently denied such charges, saying the attacks are false flag moves by militants ahead of a likely investigation by a team of the United Nations chemical experts.
Last month, Reuters quoted British government sources as saying that London “is clearly not going to arm the rebels in any way, shape or form”.
"If you give arms to General Idriss, how sure can you be that they won't end up in the wrong hands and be used to shoot down a Western civilian airliner?" the source added.
However, the Wednesday incident could change odds in favor of Idris and his terrorist group, feared to be an al-Qaeda offshoot, as Hague said in reaction to the alleged chemical attack that they “do believe” it has been carried out by the Syrian government forces.
