British Foreign Secretary William Hague claims the Syrian army’s successful offensive against foreign-backed militants is the biggest obstacle to peace in the country.
"What is being done now by the regime who have embarked on fresh military offensives since it was agreed that we would have a second Geneva conference is not helping to bring that about," Hague told reporters on Monday on the sidelines of a UN Security Council meeting he chaired.
This comes as the militants continue their offensive against Syrian government forces and civilian targets but London has refused to call for a halt in their attacks, or their violence against civilians and the army forces, as it has been Britain’s practice since the conflict began in March 2011.
Britain has been directly providing assistance to armed militants in Syria over the past months with the stated aim of overthrowing the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Asad.
London has also been pushing for sending arms to Syrian militants that places Hague in the impossible position of claiming London wants the terrorists armed to make peace.
Meanwhile, the militants, rather than the Syrian government, have boycotted the proposed Geneva 2 peace talks.
Hague also claimed that new efforts are needed to bring the Syrian government to the negotiating table while Damascus has been expressing its readiness for sending a delegation to the proposed Geneva conference for at least a month.
Russia and the US have agreed to hold a follow-up meeting to the 2012 Geneva conference on Syria to find a peaceful solution to the situation.
The conference, originally planned to be held in June, has been hampered by the divisions between foreign-backed militants and their western supporters.
