Obama Won't Be Specific On Military Aid To Syrian Opposition

June 19, 2013

U.S. President Barack Obama has refused to be specific about what weapons Washington would provide to Syrian opposition forces.

U.S. officials said last week that military aid would be sent to the Syrian opposition.

At a news conference in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Obama said he "cannot and will not" be specific about what sort of military equipment would be sent to Syrian rebels.

Obama repeated that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should step down because it is impossible for him to regain legitimacy in Syria.

Obama mentioned that Russian President Vladimir Putin raised concerns at the G8 meeting earlier this week that if Assad is toppled, what follows could be worse.

Obama also expressed concerns that Syrian chemical weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.
