The UN-Arab League special representative for Syria has expressed hope that the Tehran conference on Syria would help bring about an end to the ongoing crisis in the Arab country.

“Tehran conference as well as the Geneva 2 conference are highly important and we hope they would help resolve the crisis in Syria, which is in a very complicated condition,” Lakhdar Brahimi said in a Wednesday message to the Friends of Syria Conference in Tehran.

On Wednesday, Iran hosted the Friends of Syria Conference in Tehran under the banner of “Political Solution, Regional Stability.” The event was attended by representatives from 40 countries, seeking to find a political solution to the crisis in the Arab country.

On May 7, Russia and the United States also agreed to convene an international conference on Syria in Geneva, which will serve as a follow-up to an earlier Geneva meeting held in June 2012. Russia has highlighted the necessity of Iran's presence in the event. No exact date has been set for the meeting yet.

Pointing to the upcoming Geneva 2 conference, Brahimi expressed hope that the talks would be held as soon as possible, adding, “This agreement [between Russia and the US] could be a significant step [toward the resolution of the crisis in Syria], but it is apparently the first step."

Unrest has gripped Syria for over two years and many people, including large numbers of Syrian security personnel, have lost their lives in the foreign-sponsored militancy.

On May 23, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said, “Syria is determined to tackle terrorism and those who support it regionally and globally, and to find a political solution to the crisis.”
