Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has criticized a US-backed anti-Syria draft resolution which has been put to debate by the UN Human Rights Council.

“To my huge astonishment, we have learnt that apart from the co-authors of this resolution … a US delegation is most actively promoting this completely unwholesome idea,” Lavrov said on Wednesday, describing the resolution as “odious” and “unilateral.”

The draft resolution, sponsored by Qatar and Turkey, condemns what it calls Syria’s use of foreign combatants in the fight against militants.

Lavrov said Washington's vigorous promotion of the resolution is unhelpful, warning that the resolution would undermine a joint US-Russian initiative to hold a peace conference on Syria.

“We need everyone to work honestly and not allow double standards -- backing the conference in statements and taking steps actually aimed at undermining this suggestion in practice,” Lavrov stated.

On May 7, Russia and the United States agreed in Moscow to convene an international conference on Syria in a follow-up to an earlier meeting held in Geneva in June 2012.

Iran is also hosting the Friends of Syria Conference in Tehran, with the participation of representatives from 40 countries.

The event, which is held under the banner of “Political Solution, Regional Stability,” seeks to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

Iran has already held two other meetings on the crisis in the Arab country.

The unrest in Syria erupted over two years ago and many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
