Syrian army has killed dozens of foreign-sponsored militants during mop-up operations on the outskirts of the capital Damascus.

On Wednesday, Syrian troops stormed several terrorist hideouts in the town of al-Husseinieh, located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Damascus, and shot dead scores of militants. A large amount of weapons and munitions was also destroyed after the fierce gun battles, the official SANA news agency reported.

A number of militants were also killed during intense clashes with Syrian troops in another incident in al-Husseinieh town.

In addition, Syrian forces engaged anti-government gunmen in the city of Harasta, located about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northeast of Damascus, and killed scores of them.

Separately, a unit of government forces killed scores of foreign-backed armed men at al-Raihan Farms in the city of Douma, located about 10 kilometers (six miles) northeast of Damascus.

In the town of Zamalka, about four kilometers (2.5 miles) east of Damascus, Syrian soldiers killed a number of militants. A large amount of munitions was also destroyed after the intense firefight.

Moreover, Syrian troops clashed with foreign-sponsored militants in the town of Daraya, which is located eight kilometers (five miles) southwest of Damascus. Dozens of gunmen were killed during the heavy clashes.

Syrian soldiers also attacked armed men in the town of Barzeh, located five kilometers (three miles) north of Damascus, and killed a large number of them.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed in the violence.

Several international human rights organizations have accused militants operating in Syria of committing war crimes.
