March Reported As Deadliest Month Yet In Syria

April 02, 2013

A leading opposition activist group says March was the deadliest month yet in Syria's two-year-long conflict.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists inside the country, says more than 6,000 deaths were documented last month.

Rami Abdul Rahman, the head of the group, said the death toll might even be higher because both the Syrian Army and the rebel groups fighting President Bashar al-Assad's government are "hiding information."

The group said those killed in March included 2,080 civilians, 1,486 rebels, and 1,464 army soldiers.

The rest of the dead were not identified.

The United Nations estimates more than 70,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict since it began in March 2011.
