US Ambassador says No Evidence Chemical Weapons Used in Syria
March 20, 2013
The U.S. ambassador to Syria says the United States has no evidence to support charges chemical weapons were used this week in northern Syria.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad claims rebels used chemical weapons near Aleppo, while the rebels claim Assad forces were responsible.
Ambassador Robert Ford told the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee Wednesday the Obama administration is looking carefully at the conflicting reports.
U.S. President Barack Obama has warned use of chemical weapons is 'totally unacceptable' and there would be consequences if Syria uses such weapons, without spelling out what those would be.
Meanwhile, the Syrian government says it has asked U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to investigate the alleged use of chemical weapons. The Syrian opposition has also asked for an independent investigation.
In London, British Prime Minister David Cameron told parliament reports of a chemical attack in Syria strengthened the case for relaxing a European Union arms embargo on the country.
