Syria has warned that it may strike at the positions of foreign-backed militants fighting against the Damascus government in neighboring Lebanon if the Lebanese army fails to act.
Syrian Foreign Ministry on Friday urged Lebanon to take any necessary action against anti-Syria militants operating in the border area and prevent them from entering Syria.
The ministry said although the Syrian army is able to hit militants inside Lebanon and prevent them from entering the country, it is currently showing self-restraint by not hitting their positions on the Lebanese side of the border.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry, however, warned that Damascus' patience on the matter is running out.
According to the ministry, a large number of militants have crossed Lebanon’s northern border into the Syrian town of Talkalakh over the past three days, SANA reported.
Syria says militants enjoy logistical support inside Lebanon and those who are killed or injured in clashes with the Syrian army in the border area are being taken by ambulances into Lebanon.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.
