Syrian National Council Elects New Chief in Doha

November 09, 2012

Syria's main opposition group, the Syrian National Council (SNC), has chosen a new president, 41-year-old veteran anti-regime activist George Sabra.

Sabra, a Christian, was chosen at a meting in Doha, Qatar, on November 9.

Immediately after his election, Sabra urged the opposition's supporters to provide arms for the fight against President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

The Syrian National Council is expected to join talks on November 10 with other Syrian factions to form a new, broader opposition organization.

The exile-dominated SNC has recently come under international criticism, including from the United States, for being ineffective and not having enough representatives of rebels and activists fighting inside Syria.
