Iranian Foreign Ministry issues statement on truce in Syria

Tehran, Oct 26, IRNA -- Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the agreement of the Syrian army with temporary ceasefire in Syrian, expressing hope that the truce will be prelude to beginning of a political process in Syria.

The full text of the foreign ministry’s statement is as follows:

The Islamic Republic of Iran as the host of the first advisory conference on Syria held in Tehran proposed restoring ceasefire in that country (Syria) and the participants of the conference approved Iran’s proposal as a prelude to beginning a new political trend in Syria and it was also brought in the final document of the conference.

The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan during their meeting in the Azeri capital, Baku reiterated the importance of restoring peace and tranquility to Syria.

Accordingly, the UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, who paid a visit to Tehran for reviewing the ways for achieving a political solution to the Syrian crisis, discussed the idea of restoring peace to Syria on the eve of the glorious Eid al-Adha with Iranian officials which was welcomed by the Iranian side and the two sides necessitated on implementation of the proposal.

Now that the sincere efforts by different sides who are active in Syria has succeeded and truce will be implemented throughout Syria as of Friday morning, it is expected that by commitment of all concerned groups and sides to full implementation of ceasefire and avoiding any measure which contradicts it, the grounds for achieving tranquility and sustainable peace aimed at starting diplomatic talks will be paved.

While praising and supporting the gesture of good will of the Syrian government and army and by praising the valuable efforts of Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi and concerned countries and sides, the Islamic Republic of Iran voices its readiness for continuing efforts aimed at completing the political process with the purpose of final settlement of the Syrian crisis.
