Ahmadinejad proposes forming contact group for Syria

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Sept 16, IRNA -- President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday proposed that a contact group should be formed to build links between belligerent parties in Syria.

“A group should be set up to establish links between the belligeren parties in Syria in an effort to direct current crisis towards peace, tranquility and mutual understanding,” President Ahmadinejad told his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari over phone.

He said the Non-Aligned Movement is an independent body with abundant capacities but institutions and organizations needed to follow up and implement agreements have not be set up within it.

He said the ground should be prepared for building necessary structures for enforcement of NAM approvals and to hold consultative sessions on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly with participation of the founding members and influential countries such as Pakistan.

He also condoled Zardari and the Pakistani nation on the killing or injury of a large number of Pakistani nationals in fire incidents in Karachi and Lahore.

Zardari for his part lauded Iran’s successful holding of the 16th NAM Summit and called for establishment of the needed structures within the Movement and formation of a group to mediate between the belligerent parties in Syria.
