German spy ship aiding Syrian insurgents: daily

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Aug 19, IRNA -- A German spy ship is actively helping western-backed Syrian rebels to topple the Syrian government, according to the Sunday daily Bild am Sonntag.

A ship belonging to Germany's BND foreign secret service has been deployed off the Syrian coast where it is detecting troop movements up to 600 kilometers inside Syria.

The German information on the activities of the Syrian military is reportedly being passed to the American and British intelligence services which then hand it to Syrian insurgents, the report said.

Meanwhile, Bild am Sonntag reported also that BND operatives based at the Turkish NATO base in Adana are eavesdropping to telephone and radio conversations within Syria.

Furthermore, BND agents are keeping informal contact with sources tied directly to the inner-circle of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The report cited an unidentified American intelligence agent as saying no western secret service has as good sources in Syria as the BND does.

An unnamed member of the BND told the newspaper that the intelligence service was "proud of the important contribution (it) is making to the overthrow of the Assad regime."

The latest report comes amid repeated statements by the German government opposing a western military intervention in Syria.

Berlin fears that such a military interference could ultimately trigger a major regional war.
