Syrian President decries terrorism backed by foreign powers

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Damascus, Aug 6, IRNA -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday decried terrorism sponsored by foreign powers in Syria.

“Foreign powers support terrorism in Syria. They supply terrorists with weapons. Such measures are not acceptable,” Assad told Iran’s visiting top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili.

He underlined Syrian government’s intention to address public demands through democratic means.

Jalili in turn referred to enemy objectives in Syria, saying, “One should not allow enemies take revenge on Syrian people about defeat from resistance movement.”

He emphasized that the only solution to Syrian problem is democracy and respect for the Syrian people’s demands.

He said Iran is ready to send humanitarian relief aid to the resistant people of Syria.

Jalili arrived in Damascus from Beirut on Tuesday and was welcomed by Iran’s Ambassador to Syria Mohammad-Reza Rauf Sheibani and Syrian officials.

"Iran does not support the solution which is imposed by foreigners," Jalili told reporters upon his arrival at Damascus airport.

"We believe that a new path should be followed in which national and internal talks and dialogue provide a basis to resolve the crisis," the senior Iranian security official said.

Tehran has always voiced support for the Syrian people and the reforms plan initiated by President Bashar al-Assad, and stressed that Damascus needs time to implement the reforms.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.

In October, calm was eventually restored in the Arab state after President Assad started a reform initiative in the country, but Israel, the US and its Arab allies are seeking hard to bring the country into chaos through any possible means.
