Syrian Authorities Ready to Evacuate Trapped Civilians
13:32 19/06/2012 MOSCOW, June 19 (RIA Novosti) - Syrian authorities are ready to evacuate civilians trapped in regions occupied by militants and armed anti-government groups without preconditions, SANA news agency said referring to the Syrian Foreign Ministry.
U.N. mission chief Maj. Gen. Robert Mood on Sunday urged warring parties to allow the evacuation of women, children and the sick, endangered by fighting in Homs and other combat zones.
A Syrian Foreign Ministry statement blamed "armed terrorist groups" for obstructing evacuation efforts coordinated with the U.N. observers' mission and local authorities.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said around 1,000 families have been trapped by an ongoing government assaults against rebel-controlled areas of Homs.
According to UN estimates, about 10,000 people have been killed in Syria since the beginning of a popular uprising against President Assad in March 2011.
