No new Iranian citizen has been kidnapped in Syria: Embassy
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Damascus, April 4, IRNA -- Iranian embassy in Damascus said news about kidnapping new Iranian citizens in Syria is 'baseless'
The embassy in a statement, a copy of which was sent to IRNA bureau, said that in spite of existing problems and obstacles, the embassy has been able to release 16 kidnapped Iranian citizens so far.
Currently, only 12 Iranian citizens, including seven electricity technicians and six other people from pilgrimage groups, are still in the hands of armed groups, and efforts are being made to release them.
The statement went on to say there is no obstacle for Iranian pilgrims traveleing to Syria.
The embassy also denied news by certain regional media on the presence of elements of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Syria and dispatching weapons from Iran to the country.
The statement concluded that Tehran supports Syria politically and economically with the aim of confronting the Zionist-American conspiracies against resistance and to reduce Syrians' sufferings under the US and European and Arab imposed sanctions.
