Russia Blasts Reports of Nerve Gas Used Against Syrian Protesters

RIA Novosti

18:48 15/02/2012 MOSCOW, February 15 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Foreign Ministry dismissed on Wednesday as "dirty lies" allegations by media that the Syrian regime has been using chemical weapons against protesters under the supervision of Russian specialists.

“Reports about the Syrian Army allegedly using neuro-paralytic agents during clashes in the city of Homs, assertedly under the control of specialists from Russia, have drawn Moscow’s attention,” the ministry said in a statement published on its website.

“We categorically deny such allegations. They are yet more proof of a propagandist information war unfolded over the Syrian issue, whose instigators stoop to anything, making libel statements against Russia,” the statement said.

“Somebody appears to be unable to avoid being carried away by temptation to respond with dirty lies to our principled line on the Syrian issue,” it said. “Someone is probably alarmed by Russia’s firmness aimed at overcoming the internal crisis in Syria within the international legal field by peaceful political and diplomatic means and through inclusive national dialogue between Syrians excluding foreign intervention.”

Russia is firmly committed to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) that bans such weapons and requires their destruction, the ministry said in its statement.
